This beautiful farm is situated in the Klein Karoo, about 24km from Oudtshoorn at the foothills of the Gamkaberg, which is an isolated mountain range between the Swart and Outeniqua Mountains. It is adjacent to the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve. It is a rugged, mountainous environment, which includes high hills and a large plateau. The view of the Klein Karoo from the higher parts is breathtaking. Oudtshoorn and surroundings can be clearly seen. The Swart and Outeniqua Mountains stretch east and west as far as the eye can see.

The property consists out of 3 title deeds and 4/11 undivided shares together with 5/11 share with Cape Nature in a total of 977ha. The remaining 2/11 shares were owned by shareholders which passed away many years ago with no heirs. An application for ownership will be submitted to also obtain this 2/11 shares.

There is an irrigation section of the land located on the other side of the road that is in the process of being subdivided. Once the subdivision is complete, the sale of this land can go through.

4 X 4 ROUTES

The full distance of the 4 x 4 routes is approximately 30 km (6-8 hours) and consists of four routes:

Rooiberg

Rating: 2/3
(Easy to moderate: Some experience and four-wheel drive with low range gears required. Differential lock recommended.)

This is a short route of only 7 km (2 hours) (from T3 to S1 and back). The route's turning point, S1, is on the highest peak of the Rooiberg range. The wonderful view has already been mentioned.

Due to the rough terrain, the same route is used for both ascent and descent. The road is quite steep in places (the last 2 km climb almost 300m), but the road surface is quite good when dry. However, when the road is wet, it is a different story. In some places, a wet road can be quite slippery.

Steenbokrant

Grading: 3
(Moderate. Considerable experience and four-wheel drive with low range gears required. Differential lock recommended.)

This short route of only 4.5 km (1 hour) is a circular route that starts and ends at T1. As indicated on the map, only one-way traffic is allowed on this route. The road passes through dry runs several times, at least one of which requires special care. Furthermore, you will encounter a steep uphill and rocky ridges.

Sandberg

If this route is driven on your own from the office, the full distance is 17 km (3 hours). The route climbs a large plateau on top of Sandberg from which one can see for many kilometers.

The Hole

From S2 the road drops into a very deep gorge, to S4. The distance between the two points is only 500 m, but one descends about 100 m. The road is a pass that clings to the mountainside above a precipice. At the top of the steepest 80 m of the route is a stopping or turning area, S3. This is also the only place on this stretch of road where two vehicles can pass together and where it is safe to reverse.

Kloof

Rating: 5
(Very difficult. Lots of experience, four-wheel drive with low range, differential lock, good ground clearance and recovery equipment essential.)

The one-way route follows a dry watercourse from T2 to T4 and is only 1 km long, but one vehicle takes approximately an hour to complete it. A variety of difficult obstacles such as rock banks are encountered. One of these, the Wall, presents a particular challenge even to experienced drivers. Lg. can, however, be avoided.

A reconnaissance of the route on foot before attempting it with a vehicle is essential. It is recommended that a person accompany the vehicle on foot to ‘talk’ the driver through the route.

HIKING ROUTES

Although walking may be done on any vehicle road, there are other routes for hikers only. Interested parties can inquire with me.

NATURE LIFE AND SCENERY

Rich variety of flora, fauna and geological formations.

FLORA

In the Klein Karoo (from Montagu in the west to Uniondale in the east and from the summit of the Swartberg range in the north to the summit of the Outeniqua and Langeberg ranges in the south), a semi-desert area, three biomes (vegetation regions) overlap, namely the Succulent Karoo, the Fynbos and Subtropical thicket forest biome. Some of the plants of the Nama Karoo biome (Great Karoo) also occur here. The result is an astonishing diversity of plants in the Klein Karoo. Minwater boasts approximately 600 of these plant species.

FAUNA

If one looks closely, many mammal species or signs of their presence can be seen. The following mammals have been seen here: klipspringer, common duiker, grysbok, steenbok, vaalribbok, eland, kudu, koala, red hare, dassie, baboon, kommetjiegat, bont, grey and white-breasted skunk, badger, great otter, aardvark, red jackal, bakoro fox, maned jackal (aardwolf), caracal, vaalboskat, kleinskollmuskejaatkat, porcupine, various mouse species, bush pig, brown hyena and leopard.

More than 170 bird species have been noted here.

Furthermore, there are many mountain tortoises and other reptiles.

GEOLOGY

The formations range from shales to quartzites and sandstone. On top of the Rooiberg are thousands of wash stones.

The area has excellent underground water and this farm has more than enough places where boreholes can be drilled for water supply.
